OnFebruary2013,Haleem,borninAleppo,Syria,planstoescapethecivilwarandgotoGermany,wherehissisterlives,andlaterinvitehisfamilyafterbeinggrantedrefugeestatus.DuringthetransitinKorea,heiscaughtwithafakepassportanddeniedentry.HeislatersenttoTurkeywhereheisdeniedentryagain,endingupbackinKorea.AfterstayinginthedeportationroomintheKoreanairport,heissenttostayataforeignshelter,whenonedayhehearsofhisson'sdeathandgoesintoaviolentrage,unabletohandlethesadnews.Thelawyerinchargeofhiscasecontinuestochallengehisdetention,andtheKoreanMinistryofJusticeendsupcancelinghisEmergencyProtectiveOrderwithoutnotifyinghim.Haleem,whounintentionallysteppedintounfamiliarKoreansoil,findshimselfworkingillegallyataconstructionsite,wherehemeetsRiyadh,anunregisteredArabresident.Theycomforteachother'spainanddevelopafatherandsonrelationship.Haleem,whohadsavedmoneytobringinhisfamilytoKorea,spentallhishard-earnedmoneypayingoffRiyadh'sfather'sdebts.WiththehelpofYoussef,aChristianArab,Haleemgetsajobatajunkyardandaplacetostay.ButRiyadhgetsintoaseriousaccidentandispronouncedbraindeadafterheischasedbyimmigrationofficers.ThechurcheldersandministersplottouseRiyadh'sorgansfortheirchurchmainelder'stransplantsurgery.TheytrytopersuadeHaleemtoconcedebytellinghimthatthechurchcanbringhiswifeanddaughterfromtheTurkishrefugeecamptoKoreaalongwiththeirmissionarygroup.Haleemfallsintoareligiousconflictandmoraldilemma,leadingotherArabsaroundhimtomisunderstandhim.Astoryaboutapersonstuckinthemidstofcultural,religious,ethnic,andnationalconflict.
