ManycriticspointedoutresemblancesbetweenDom,VKotoromYaZhivu(TheHouseILiveIn)andthebetter-knownSovietfilmTheCranesareFlying.SetintheyearspriortoandduringWWII,thestorycentersonthevariousresidentsofaco-ophouse.Thoughthedirectorsnevershowthewaritself,itstragicimpactisfeltthroughoutthefilm.AnddespitethepotentialforSovietpropaganda,whatsticksinthemindistheuniversalityoftheexperiencesenduredbytheleadingcharacters.Dom,VKotoromYaZhivuwasoneofRussian'sentriesinthe1958BrusselsFilmFestival.
